TAP Study Challenge #16: Value study

Unread postby sampetersonart » Mon Sep 05, 2016 1:46 pm

Description:
The new study challenge for the next week is to paint or draw a value study of a photograph, or from life. You are free to choose to do a study of anything you'd like to improve/focus on whether that is a portrait, skull, figure, still life, etc but focus on the greyscale values of that subject. Try to pick something that you think would help you on a subject you're trying to improve in, such as portrait for example.

Rules and Guidelines:
-This a master study challenge.
-Approach it with an idea of what you'd like to focus on and learn from the study.
-Any medium is allowed.
-WIPs and finals can be posted in this thread. Try to post all your images in the same post by "editing" it if possible.
-Due before Sam's stream on Monday, September 12th.

whats up , Mr Sam.
I did a line art using digital inking pen in medibang paint. Its based on reference of a character featured in a newer starwars comic featuring princess Leia exclusively. In one of the stories this corrupt like, half sister, partner in crime chic she hooks up with, and I thought she looked more like Leia than the Leia they were drawing in the strip.

I added a gradient to tell me where light is, in the general direction. Then I flatted the character with a dark value and then on clipped layers plotted out in the lighter values where light hits from my own minds eye without reference. I can never seem outline the regions to make the character have more visual appeal, structure, with the cartoony cellshaded forms. Usually end up have to copy what somebody else mapped out. Any suggestions?

Turned into a syrupy mess of a light study! FailFish .. but thats not what the finshed picture whould look like obviously, but more like a practice map to go by for actual coloring.

Hey guys, I hope I'm not too late with this :)

Originally started as a study for Sam's class, I took this opportunity to work on it some more.
