Challenge Suggestions!

Unread postby sampetersonart » Sat Jul 04, 2015 1:30 pm

As the weeks go by we'll need more and more ideas for challenges. If you have any ideas feel free to post them in this thread! Just look at the challenge types below and specify which category each idea belongs to.

Challenge Types:

Illustration Challenge:
A general description and guidelines for an illustration will be given. Will depict an entire scene as opposed to a single concept.

Open Concept Challenge:
A general backstory, description, or video game premise will be given. People can choose what in the story interested them and do a concept of it.

Redesign Challenge:
Character or creature from a video game, movie, show, comic, etc is redesigned with a general theme or twist in mind.

Concept Challenge:
Each challenge a topic with a brief description is given. Can rotate between a character, creature, environment, vehicle, weapon, prop, etc.

Redesign Challenge: GAME OVER.
Redesign a classical video game character to fit a post-apocalyptic world.
(Possibly just a character challenge, but could be expanded to character + environment?)

Character Challenge: Three Evil Sisters.
An illustration of a group of three women.
You must also incorporate these three materials: leather, fur, and feather.

Character Challenge: The Same, But Different.
Create an illustration of a character looking into a reflective surface, but the character looking back is in some way not the same.

1) A samurai style warrior. This could be someone in a robotic suit of armor wielding a lazer katana or a traditional samurai wielding kunai and throwing stars.

2) The lair of a monster or demon. This could be a drawing of a sleeping ogre in a cave or just a nest where some kind of demonic creature sleeps.

3) A hybrid of 2 animals. This could include fictional creatures as well as real ones. Some examples would be an elephant crossed with a shark, or a centaur mixed with a xenomorph.

Illustration Challenge:
  • Draw yourself or someone else (as long as it is a real life person) as a Gorillaz character, as seen in the band's art and videoclips.
Open Concept Challenge:
  • A general description (or background story) of a villain(ess) is given, it is up to the artist to come up with his or her minion(s).
Redesign Challenge:
  • Create a realistic version of a cartoon character. This can be from a game, a children's book, an animated series or a movie.
  • Select a pokémon (I would recommend going with a randomly selected pokémon) and draw your own interpretation of it.
Concept Challenge:
  • Design a moustache-twirling villain! The character needs to be evil, classy and sporting facial hair.
(Might make for a good challenge in Movember? Of course it has to be strictly moustache only then.)

A character design challenge for a God/angel could be pretty awesome. Similar to Pete Mohrbacher's work.

I think about the following a lot:

A dying creature or humanoid dragging itself to a place to lay down, including emotions like pain, fear and maybe even shame if it's critically wounded after losing a fight.
This would make it very interesting to see how different people interpret those emotions and how they'd work with gesture and body language basically.

I would let the artist decide what brings the creature / person to its knees, wether it's illnes, age or injury.

Cheers :)

How about having people draw their Zodiac symbol?
I brought the idea up in Sam's stream today.

To go along with the Zodiac idea, a twist could be to also incorporate the animal of your birth year from the Chinese Zodiac.

I found a box of old drawings from my childhood that my parents saved, so I thought it would be a fun idea for a challenge if you recreated one with your current skills.

Since we just hit October there could be some sort of challenge for Halloween to design a monster and/or monster hunter.

I think this would be an interesting challenge as we would see both characters and creatures. It could even just be an open Halloween challenge letting us see some spooky environments too.

Historic figures re-imagined!

Unread postby Vellor » Mon Oct 26, 2015 2:35 pm

Redesign Challenge

Pick a historical figure from your history knowledge and re imagine them!
The term Re-imagine, can really fall into any subject you like, if you want to draw napoleon in a sci-fi setting then do it! if you want to draw queen Elizabeth the Virgin queen in a formal and period accurate setting, then do it!
The character you pick needs to have some sort of accomplishment that have is worth being written down in history, but it doesn't need to be a character that is widely known to everyone.
You can use any character from any country.

if you cant find a good history figure from your memory bank, then you can use one of these maybe:

Ghengis Khan
Ogedai Khan
Napoleon
Lothbrok
Marko Pollo
Washington
Julius Cesar
Hannibal
Scippio
Shaka Zulu
Sun Tzu
Qin Shi Huang (first Chinese Emperor)
Alexander the great
Gaius Marius

How about taking a popular game character and making an art nouveau styled illustration based on them? Or an illustration made to look like a stained glass window? (So I'm a little biased on the later since that's actually what I do, except I never get to do illustration, it's always damned repetitive geometric patterns...)

What. no magical rings! Magical rings should be the next challenge, no fantasy setting can be without them! Sc-fi you say! Rings can desginate power and command! Kappa

Magical Rings have shaped everything to due with fiction.

P.S. This is just a ploy to get Lord of the Rings onto the challenge board. Kappa

The Queen of the Dead

Many soldiers pretend to have met the queen of dead on the battlefield. Though some few might really have, most people have never seen her. But despite of that there are many rumors around her existence. All agree on her being the most beautiful creature in the universe and that there are no words to describe her beauty. But it is a cold, cruel and mysterious beauty. Colder than ice, crawling into your flesh and piercing your heart and soul. The bloody battlefield is her catwalk, where she harvests the souls of the fallen, making them a part of her dark empire.

This challenge could be:
1. A pure character concept of the Queen of the Dead
2. An illustration including the queen and a scene which fits to her general characteristics.

This could be a science fiction, as well as a fantasy setting.

Actually, I quite like the idea of a jewelry/ornamental design challenge.
