BigMisch's Sketchbook & Photos

Unread postby BigMisch » Fri Jul 31, 2015 4:58 am

Hello Art posse! I've mostly been doing a bunch of figure studies lately, because I want to level up. So I'll share them here! Some of my finished work can be seen on my site http://www.whitneymisch.com

I'm starting to stream these studies. No set schedule yet, except I like to stream on weekend mornings. :)

Any and all feedback is welcome! Cheers!

@apainfulpoo Thanks for stopping in! And thanks for checking out my site haha.

Here is some more junk. I think I hate the swords actually. I think the design is really weak and boring. I was kind of going for cartoon WOW style, but I still think they are weak. Guess I need to do some weapon studies. And the lizard guy was for a sketch prompt at work.

I think your figure studies are great, BigMisch. You've picked good refs with strong lighting and kept that value contrast well. Hope to see more from you. Keep it up!! OSsloth OSsloth

yea! nice studies man! keep that up man! best way to improve for sure! also, i noticed you kinda werent feeling your sword designs in the last one, there is a sure way to overcome that feeling of inadequacy... open them back up in photoshop. and change them. forcing yourself to rework ideas that you consider completed is one of the fastest ways to getting really different results. treat it as you would a strangers paintover... just open the jpg file... and make marks over it... change it a bunch, go crazy... toss random photo textures or clip out a random section of a photo and try and make that somehow fit with either a new color scheme, or shape that stands out to you... just be 100% from your imagination... lose any images in your head of other artists styles... thats a dead end road. but youll feel much better if you try something new rather than having that bad feeling of giving up on a design. especially if you spent a decent amount of time on it. and then you cant say anything bad about it after either! show your work the respect it deserves :) and keep it up!

Like people are saying, studies looks good and keep at it :) Don't get put of by the sword thing, design is difficult till you have done a lot of it, I think many of us struggle with that.

Not much to show, I was out of town for a bit. Time to get back to work, and stop slacking!

Here is a sketch jam from work. the prompt was "jet pack, laser gun, chainmail, tattoos"

@rengb Thanks!
@thor6136 Thanks! I guess the skull was a hit! I'll have to pint more acrylic!

Also, I forgot to post these things. Got super lazy when I got down to the legs, because I decided they were terrible. The shape language for them is not consistent, or unique across the three. I'll have to do better ones!

Hey BigMisch,

Great stuff so far. The only current feedback I have to give is that your figures are looking a little stiff. If you haven't already go check out Proko's video series on gesture drawing ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74HR59yFZ7Y ). And try following along. It might seem boring or annoying to do, but gesture drawing is so worth it in the end and is super helpful to express actions in your poses.

Keep it up!

@Jan Thanks!!
@Forrest I agree! I've been doing a lot of gestures to work on it, and it's really helping. Thanks for the link! I think I'll be on that site a lot now haha! :)

Sorry for the spam, but here's the last of the scans! Like I said, I wrapped up three sketchbooks in a frenzy at the end of last year, and here is the last bit.

All the gestures are 1 min.

and here is a generic alien bust.

and here is some small progress on the orc

and here is a little process gif of the minotaur. It jumps at the end because I wanted to have the character separate from the BG, so I had to work on one layer. :/

Hey Misch, cheers for stopping by my sketchbook :)

You've got some nice stuff going on in here, I really like some of those sketchbook pages. You're putting out a nice volume of work too which is always good! I think you're on a pretty good track, I'd just suggest to maybe focus on your line work a bit and also to slow down to do some longer studies every now and then so you can really push how accurate you can get. In my opinion it's one of the best exercises to do since it improves your ability to see mistakes. Keep it up!
