For actual line work, i'd look in to tutorials on "How to make Smooth Lines" and "Line Weight Variation", both coincide with each other, but are also one of the things that takes a good bit of mileage to improve.

Jazza has some quick and simple tutorials that explain it, Here and Here.

A good habit to form, is when you first start a drawing session, spend a little time drawing lines, circles and sharp angles, as a warm-up. Try to get used to using your whole arm, which will feel weird at first, but will help make smoother lines. As well, when it comes to Line Art, it's good to make fast strokes, and just get used to undoing rather than erasing, in conjunction with the fast strokes. stroke, undo, stroke undo, stroke "ah that looks good", move to next line.

Just keep in mind good Line Work is REALLY difficult, still quite attainable, but more of the muscle memory side of art, of which only time spent practicing can progress. =]

Gotcha, my tablet I have is the worst at picking up pressure. So I was trying all sorts of different brushes to attempt to compensate for it. I settled with just the standard round for now with no line weight. I think if I want to get good line weight I of course will have to practice, but I think an upgrade is going to have to happen. My tablet just sucks at the start up for pressure, I have to press down like I want to snap the tip to get it to go well.

The shape practice is probably a thing I should do, not only for clean lines but just to help with my form to. Cause I find I suck with describing form well with my lines. It could be my line weight. But I feel its me not having good accuracy.

I appreciate the advice and helpful tips :D, as well as the links.

I was only able to do 3, I was horribly slow as this was a new method. I think they read way way better then my other ones, I know they need work, but for now I am very happy with my work. I used reference to start, but after I got started went on my own to problem solve and think things through. Last thing I am doing for tonight as it is 1 AM.

I meant to mention that, depending on pressure sensitivity, you can get the same effect by using a hard round that is roughly as big as the thickest you want your lines, and then erase it into the shape of the line weight. That makes it a lot more work though, than a pressure = size type brush, but, like you're saying with your tablet, it may be what you have to work with.

At least knowing the line weight theory let's you start practicing it, to see what looks good where, and you can look forward to upgrading your tablet that much more. =]

I just got home from Thanks Giving vacation and I decided to do some chest studies from imagination, the shading was just for fun. But I flew with it, I shaded the chest in like 15 mins for each of them which for me is crazy fast. Looking forward to getting back into the groove of things :3.

I definitely prefer the painting side of digital art. When I started painting instead of fretting over how bad my line work looked, I got way more interested as a whole.

A good type of study for painting, is Form Studies, which is pretty much the painting version of the perspective stuff Sam went through recently. You just decide on a light source, and then draw a bunch of cubes and spheres and cylinders and random geometric shapes, and then shade them all according to the light source you picked. They also work well in that cyclical study method, where you sketch all the shapes as lines, get all the perspective right, then you get go through and paint in the shading, and push it by adding cracks and divots to the faces of the objects.

Istebrak has some good videos on Form Studies, Here and Here

Huh, I have never heard of that kind of studies before I will have to either give it a shot tonight or tomorrow. As I am dead very sleepy from speed painting 2 characters in 3 hours. I was trying to see how much I could accomplish within that aloted time and what areas I need to improve on.

Thanks for the videos :D.

Digital painting is truly the best, its so nice.

I did two speed paints today, with the idea of giving myself 3 hours each. I wanted to both improve my speed as well as my thinking on the go, I felt the first went very well. But the second not so much, as I had to deal with cloth. Which I found is a huge weak point, also I streamed the second version and noticed a difference in quality. But I found the structure wasn't all that bad. It was a very good learning experience for me.

Yesterday's and today's work, I am going to try and get into the mid set of doing a character a day. Just for good practice in mastering the human body, I also found I really enjoy armor doodles. So I may do that on a daily basis, But I think I got better in depicting form with the human form.

I am also looking into doing buildings, and trying more landscapes. I need to get better with environments and buildings.

Also the TAP Challenge I finished.

Just some basic legs and my daily character sheet, came up with a new way for me to do hips that is fairly easy. I think I am gonna stick with it to see how things go. But so far the bowl shape seems to work better then box method for me. It will be interesting to see how much the daily characters improve with this method.
