I'm seeing some nice and steady progression here. The Afanc looks pretty dope too. Great job and keep up the good work.

Nice!

I feel like you could better explain whats going on here visually. What is the relationship of these two characters? Is the lady happy/sad/surprised? Is the elemental thing doing anything? Just sitting there?

These are the questions a viewer will have when looking at this, and the more you can explain visually to the viewer, the more interesting the piece!

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the feedback BigMisch.

The truth is I just started painting this piece with the intent of exploring colour and light, the characters are merely what came to mind first; however, I'll keep those things in mind next time I do a more focused illustration.

I think these things are important to think about when doing color and light!

For example, you could take the drawing there, and set up four different "color and light" setups, and it could tell four different stories. Don't forget, each tool we have in our artist's toolbox is just that, a tool. It's what you choose to build with that tool that determines how good you are with it.

So exploring the execution of an idea is how you study, in my opinion. For example "I want to make this scene happy, so I'll try and use a happy light setup". Learning what makes a happy setup, and figuring out how to do it, would be a way to study light and color. What makes "good" lighting and color, is one that achieves what the artist was trying to convey. If you aren't trying to convey something, how can you tell if the lighting is good or bad?

That may all just be a ramble, but I hope some of it made sense!
