Zenphee's Sketchbook

Unread postby Zenphee » Mon Mar 20, 2017 10:33 am

Hey everyone! I've been doing a couple TAP weekly challenges over the past couple of months, but have neglected to start a sketchbook, until now! Here are some recent studies, sketches, and unfinished works (you might recognize some from the weekly challenges). Looking forward to improving with everyone!

Feel free to check out my website for more of my finished stuff: http://joexswanson.wixsite.com/swanson-portfolio

Thanks for the kind words, LegionBrewer!

Here's a quick update of what I've been doing the past 3 weeks (spent a long time on the weekly challenge so I didn't get many studies done)

Here's some more stuff from this week!

Some more figure drawing practice:

Did some thumbnails for The Artifact challenge. I've never really done weapon design, so this was a new thing for me. Used some final fantasy weapons for inspiration:

I'm currently taking a drawing class, in which we are doing portrait drawings. Here is a profile drawing of another student, followed by my self-portrait:

Lastly, I neglected to finish a study I am working on and instead did a redraw of a character I drew a lot when I was in high school. I always get in the mood to draw anime when I look through my old sketchbooks...

This week was super busy, so I only have two things to post.

First, I finished the character painting that I posted a wip of earlier:

Thank you JYELtheREAL! :D

I did my first environment study this week, and it was....sub par to say the least. But I kind of expected that, as I have very little experience painting environments. The values are too light and I need to work on techniques to paint things with small details, like trees and grass. I have started another study that already looks much better that I will hopefully post next week.

Environment study #2! I looked at some techniques for rendering trees and grass, and it has helped me quite a bit. I really like how the trees turned out in this study, though I got a little lazy with the grass. The values and hues have also improved over the previous study.

Great stuff Zenphee. Good balance of studies and imaginative work going on here. Keep at it.

One thought/crit I had would to be try to focus the attention of your characters more in the face and upper body. Try creating more value contrast in the area you want the viewer to focus on, and ease off the brights in the lower body/legs. As it is now the legs seem to draw just as much attention as the upper body due to having the same lighting. Also, typically the lower area won't be catching as much direct light. Almost like how the lower area of sphere will a bit darker. Not as obvious in a character, but still there.

A few examples of easing off the value contrast in the lower area to bring more attention to the focal point/upper region.

Decided to challenge myself with a painting that would put what I've been learning to the test, so I painted Widowmaker in a pose inspired by one of her highlight intros. I tried to make the pose difficult to push my figure drawing abilities, and used some interesting, harsh lights. I would appreciate any feedback!

It has been way too long since my last post. I've been a lot busier lately. Anyway, I did bi-weekly challenge 70, and continued to work on it after posting it in the Finals thread. This has been taking up most of the time I've had to paint, but I can finally move on to something else (gotta get back into doing studies!).

I was not super proud of how this turned out, though I think the composition and mood of the piece worked pretty well. I need to keep practicing rendering environments!

I'm doing some drawings for Inktober! Probably not going to be able to do one every day, but I'll try to draw as many as possible. The prompt for day 1 was "swift":

Day 3: Poison
Not sure I like this one all that much, but I can't figure out why. Oh well, half the goal of this is just to practice good drawing habits.
Also realized I definitely messed up the perspective in yesterday's drawing but I guess that's why we practice...

Day 7: Shy. After 20 minutes of mustering up the courage to greet the visitor, he decided it would just be weird at this point anyway, and hid instead.
