TAP Study Challenge #31: Gesturing and Poses

Unread postby sampetersonart » Tue Apr 10, 2018 12:08 pm

Description:
The new study challenge for the next two weeks is to paint or draw poses and gestures. The focus is to work on getting movement and action through your figures. These don't need to be super detailed drawings but focus on getting the movement, big shapes, and lines of actions in your studies. You can focus on dynamic poses, common resting poses, or really anything you want to work on. There's no set amount of drawings you need to do for this challenge, but just fit in as many as you're able.

Rules and Guidelines:
-This a figure drawing/gesture study challenge.
-Approach it with an idea of what you'd like to focus on and learn from the study.
-Any medium is allowed.
-WIPs and finals can be posted in this thread. Try to post all your images in the same post by "editing" it if possible.
-Due before Sam's stream on Monday, May 7th.

HeyGuys This is my first post on TAP!

I did some warm-up gestures, 1 minute each. I never know if I'm going too much into detail and not getting enough gesture. It feels so stiff. I also kept on running out of time and couldn't finish some poses. Oops, will do better next time.

Rough 6-9 minute poses, no cleanup. Focus on overlapping shapes and at least somewhat human proportions :)

I'll try to submit a few every day.

DAY 3 I've noticed my previous figures were heavy on construction and not as gesture-ish as I wanted them to, so I reduced the time limit to 30 seconds. Now 30 seconds sounds like plenty of time to sketch a basic figure, but it turned out to be much more brutal than I imagined, so I cranked it back up to two minutes.

DAY 4 This time I focused on what gave me the most trouble, hip rotation and the weight bearing leg.

DAY 5 Keeping the gesture train going OSsloth I slowed down in several places to analyze and better understand the forms

DAY 6 Added second pass to emphasize simplified forms

DAY 7 A whole week of gestures, woot! Today I cranked it to eleven and did gestures from imagination, based on one referenced pose.

DAY 8 Same exercise as yesterday. This rotation from imagination stuff is great at exposing flaws in both my spatial thinking and the understanding of simplified anatomical masses that make for a good gesture so I think I'll stick with it for a while.
